Uwe Schey (TabExpo 2011 - a great success)

Design before You Code

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I am happy that I chose software development as a carrier so many years ago. I have not regretted my decision. Software has always fascinated me. Good software makes our lives easier and better software has changed our personal and professional lives more than any other technology in the past 20 years. And: the end of the process of making software can not be predicted.

Along with software, there are other technologies that bring the same kind of fasicination to me. I am speaking from the art of movie making. Perhaps my love of software and movies can be explained through some analogies. The computer visionary Ted Nelson has also alluded that developing software is a sub-category of movie making.

Dear friends and colleagues,

there are always changes, changes that push mankind and society forward, there are changes that are determined by our own actions and there are changes that are predestined and are made for us by circumstances beyond our control. The story goes that whosoever can adapt to changes will always be a winner. The looser that does not or cannot adapt to the changes is just that, the looser. Typical examples are the Dinosaurs, they could not adapt and therefore lost - forever!

The 21st Century will be the century of changes. The Internet, the mobilization and globalization were the first signs and indications of what’s to follow. The financial and economic crises will show us changes over the next few years that we dare to think of nor imagine in our wildest dreams. It is comforting to know that changes can and will be positive as well. In times of change the deck will be newly shuffled. Dinosauriers that did not want to move laid down and dies making room for new species, species that are smaller and more adaptable, species that have not yet satisfied their hunger and attack each and every day new, stronger, more innovative and successful. In these times of change each enterprise or business must mostly decide for themselves wither they will come out of this as a winner or a looser. In the end every employee will decide if his company wins or looses.

Everything is going to be alright.

Best Regards

Detlef Riedel
